Can we use external hard drive for mac and windows laptop

This is commonly used when one buys a new Mac and wants to transfer files and installed software from the old Mac to the new one.

Mac to Mac with one as an external drive requires a Firewire (IEEE 1394) connection (at least I never tried USB) not very well supported in Windows. Seems people engrossed in Windows and never really used a Mac aren't understanding what one can do.
